Flared tweed shift + styling a too-long belt

BW DVF dress3

DVF Yvette A-line dress c/o, H&M; belt J.Crew heels (old), Chanel wallet on chain, Banana Republic sunglasses c/o

For my last post in this series with DVF, I chose a third silhouette with this A-line sheath. When browsing stores that don’t specifically offer petite sizing, I’ve learned to look for certain signs of potential. My eyes zoom towards empire-looking waistlines or mini lengths on leggy models, which likely equate to a normal-waisted dress with regular length on me (as was the case here).

Several of you had questions on this belt knot so I wanted to show it closer up. I regularly use the single loop (pictured at Step # 4 below), but for straps that are significantly longer, the excess length dangles reminiscent of male body parts and nobody wants that! This pretzel-style loop results in a clean finish that really highlights the waistline, which I love for dressier looks. When I find cute skinny belts, I don’t mind buying even if they’re a little big. Just punch extra holes and tuck away the extra length like so:

This dress is intended to be mini-length, which I do prefer for sheath style dresses to balance out a less fitted torso. I was toying with the hem folded up 2 inches:

Fellow hole puncher here….you can use a drill and drill bit for sturdy belts. I recommend trying on older belts. My dad has done this for the petite ladies in our family. Now I do it

Also, just a comment – I have noticed a shift in your taste over the last few months.. are you leaning more towards darker colours these days? I see a lot of black – which was not there so often earlier… I mean I love ALL your dresses.. but would like to see more experiments with colours! PS: Have you lost weight.. you look thinner in your latest post? Take care babe! xoxo

I like how you styled your hair here — is it the same as your youtube hair tutorial with the bump-it? If not, I'd love a tutorial.

  21. This may be a random questions, but do you think you can do a post just dedicated to cardigans? That may be overboard but I feel like I need to add more to my wardrobe now that I have a different change in occupations and I need to purchase some more. I just do not know where to start.

  24. Hello from a new reader and commenter! As a fellow petite gal, I am loving and appreciating all your resources and tips!

Can I also say that I so appreciate your mix of high/low/designer/vintage/DIY? There are so many fashion blogs that trot out a new designer item (or three) daily and seem to be a) completely inauthentic, and b) getting dressed up for the sake of fashion, not to help or inspire anyone in their actual getting dressed endeavors. Really appreciate that this site is useful and beautiful, both.
