(Video) Sweater tucking guide

different ways to tuck a sweater

Sweater season is officially here! I’ve previously posted on styling a sweater over a dress, and in today’s reel (watch video here or scroll to the bottom of this post) I wanted to share a few more ways to style and tuck your sweaters. I love a good oversized, loose fitting knit, but depending on the outfit, a little strategic tucking can help highlight the waistline and make the overall look more flattering!

1. Back Tuck

For a clean look across the front, knot your sweater with a hair tie in the back and either flip the “tail” up into the sweater or tuck it inside the back of your jeans. Or, I’ve seen others do this with two hair ties one on each side.

2. Twist Tuck

EVERLANE SWEATER xxs (softens up with wear), LEVIS JEANS in “shut up” wash 24 with hems cut (exact wash I have)

I’ve been doing the twist tuck a ton with my white and striped button up shirts to add a little interest, and also love it with a simple solid colored sweater!

3. Half / French Tuck

Sezane sweater xxs (bookmark b/c this does get restocked!), LEVIS JEANS in “shut up” 24 with hems cut (exact wash I have)

4. Belt Tuck

EVERLANE SWEATER xxs, EXPRESS DRESS xxs petite (similar SLIP SKIRT)

One of my old favorite tricks for pairing a sweater with a dress or skirt!

5. Bra Band Tuck

See the full outfit here. I love this trick when wearing extra chunky knits that will leave lumps and bumps if I tuck it in regularly. Note however that this method does not work with my beloved Neiwai bras that are super stretchy without a defined band. It requires a more firm band like a regular bra band with clasp back or a fitted sports bra with an elastic band.

6. The Cardigan Tuck

VERO MODA CARDIGAN xs, Everlane sLIM CROP PANTS 00 ankle (waist fits like a sz 25)

    Hi Jean,
Thank you for these tips. Do you have these videos up somewhere(youtube?) where they run at regular speed? This is too fast and there is no way to pause or see what is going on. For me that is.

    Thanks.

Hi! I don’t have these videos saved elsewhere, but I appreciate you letting me know about the speed and I’ll keep that in mind for future videos!

Love these tips and tricks! Thanks for letting us know that the Sezane sweater gets restocked – I’ve been on the hunt for that one for a while!

Unrelated to sweaters….your eyebrows look fab. Are you doing something different than your usual routine??

Thank you! I’ve been using Anastasia brow freeze to brush the brow hairs upward for a more full look, and then penciling it a bit

This striped Alex Mill sweater/cardigan looks pretty similar to your Sezane one. I keep eyeing both of them, but haven’t pulled the trigger.
Both are cotton sweaters, so I fear it’s too heavy without the warmth. Now if they were merino wool, lightweight and toasty, they would be irresistible!

Yes, that one looks beautiful! I’ve shared it before as a similar option but it seems like both the Alex Mill and Sezane are quite popular and tend to sell out!

Have you seen Muji’s “Yak Wool Mix Mock Neck sweater”? It’s great for petites in terms of sleeve and sweater length, the stitching is even, and the wool (90%) and Yak hair (10%) isn’t itchy. I was thrilled when I tried it on and found that it fit well. I went one size higher for a looser fit.
