Confidence piece: the (faux) leather pencil skirt

how to style a faux leather pencil skirt

Never thought I’d say this about something trend-forward like a leather skirt, but this is one confidence-boosting piece I wouldn’t mind in multiple colors – and most of the online reviewers agree! Check the customer photos on Express for this vegan leather skirt in brown, which looks beautiful and is also available in both petites and regular sizing.

As mentioned in this earlier blog post (with one of my most-saved outfits this year!), this would be chic for offices with a more lax or creative dress codes or for a night out on the town. It features a flattering higher waistline, figure skimming fit, and a true tapered pencil shape that hits right below my knees – my favorite, visually elongating hem length for skirts like this. The leather has a nice matte, very lightly pebbled finish to it and slight stretch. 00 petite measures 12″ across the waist, 16″ across the hips, and 22″ in length.

Here are a few other petite-friendly pieces from Express I’ve tried on and would recommend!

  • Belted sheath dress – Excellent value for a sharp work piece, especially when on sale. Material is lighter in weight and unlined, but the silhouette and stretch is very flattering and XXS is a perfect fit on me. The slim belt and the placement of the slit are small touches that help this simple dress stand out a bit.
  • High waist plaid pencil skirtSee this on me (work outfit #5). My usual size is a figure hugging, stretchy fit and it has a tweed-like look from afar without the thickness of tweed.
  • Mid rise wide leg trousers – 00 Short fits me with 3″ heels. This is a classic, flatteringly-cut pant in a fabric that feels fairly wrinkle resistant. Note petite ladies similar to me in heigh will need heels even with the Short inseam.

I have a black leather pencil skirt and I love it, but am stuck on how to style it other than pumps. I’d like to get more use out of it. Any suggestions for the cold winter months?

Love your style, and your posts about life! Do you know of any bloggers who are pregnant this time around? As much as I love this skirt, I don’t think I’ll be fitting into it anytime soon!

I avoided faux leather because some of them are way too glossy for my taste. But this one looks really classy with the matte finish. Love the minimal look you have created with it.

I love the vegan leather skirt and sweater you’ve paired it with, Jean. Such a great look! I have the houndstooth version of the belted sheath dress you mention in this post, and its styling and stretch is outstanding.

Hi Jean – Thank you for your beautiful & class look featuring this skirt! I’m wearing the one today at work with tan colored Uniqlo mock neck shirt tucked in with my Gucci belt, black tights, & black pumps. It’s about 95 % Jean Wang look & I love it

I find your posts to be very informative; I love reading them. One question, though: how to wear this pencil skirt if we are not slim as you are, and are becoming quite round, as the apple shape?

Hi Ellen, I think the pencil skirt can be very flattering on many body types (just make sure it has good stretch). I love looking through some of the online reviewer photos for different products (like this skirt) as it’s nice to see how women with different heights and body shapes style the same items.

I LOVE wearing a (faux) leather pencil skirt to work in fall and winter! I feel so confident and powerful! And I really never see anyone else wearing one, so I always feel like I stand out (in a good way). I need to get a new one as I lost a little weight, and the one I wore last year is too big on me now!
