Fall staples + how to get hats to stay on your head

black grey brown fall outfit FS

J.Brand jeans in “vanity” sz 24, Bobeau drape cardigan sz XSP
BP booties (older style), Talbots tee (similar one I love), Hinge wool hat (similar)

I sometimes hear pairing brown with black (also navy with black) as a “don’t” and can’t imagine why! I think the two work together harmoniously, which inspired this outfit comprised of four of my favorite neutrals.

How to get hats to stay on your head bobby pins

This outfit prompted me to also share a little tip I’ve been using to keep hats secure on your head! After having one too many gusts of wind leave me chasing after a hat, I came up with these super easy hairpin loops made of thin elastic. Simple sew two (one near each ear) pieces of elastic by hand into the interior of a hat band, and use them as loops to secure bobby pins to. If needs be, seal the cut edges of the elastic with clear nail polish to prevent fraying. I am slowly in the process of adding these to all my hats, especially the lightweight ones from summer!

Black skinny jeans are high up on my fall/winter staples list, as they’re so flattering especially with booties. This J.Brand pair is an old favorite of mine…. It’s a high-waisted style that fully covers my lower belly, which some may be averse to but in my older age I love how it holds everything in and flattens that area. The material of these in “vanity” is a substantial-weight denim (please note that I’ve found materials to be quite varied based on the color code, even within the same style from the same brand). Color is a regular black, not as jet black as these photos depict.

As an artist, I can only shake my head at people who think you can’t mix black, brown, and navy. They’re all neutrals, which means they go with anything.

@Jean: Love the outfit. I just got the Bobeau cardigan in mink that you have and it leaves a whole bunch of fuzz on the shirts I wear underneath..needed to lint roller it off. So if I wear it, I think I won't be able to take it off unless I'm changing for the day. Do you have that problem?

Hi Jean, for your Bobeau cardigan, how do you wash it? Do you just hang dry and how does it come out?

Wonderful advice Jean! I have such a small head. Child sized. Seriously! So finding hats to fit is near impossible. Except for vintage hats. Lovely post doll!!

Hi Jean! How far above your ankle do you get your jeans hemmed for those you wear with ankle boots? I've been eyeing some bloggers to guesstimate but just wanted to get another opinion before I take them to be hemmed.

  15. Thank you for this! I have a sun hat that I love to wear in the summer but have been wearing less and less due to annoyance with the wind pulling it off my head constantly. When I wear it I pretty much constantly have to have a hand on the brim holding it on–annoying. I'm definitely going to be trying this bobby pin idea!

I use hat elastics made for hats. They work with small hats too. I got mine on etsy. I think it's an easier and more secure solution than this and no sewing at all. Just make holes into the sweat band of the hat with a sewing needle and thread the elastic through. The elastic goes behind your ears and your hair covers it. Search up "hat elastic" on etsy and get ones that blend to your hair color.
