On the Internet you can find videos with instructions as to how to tie your Bjj belts, which may aid you as well as written instructions, as watching someone else whilst you tie your own, or your youngster’s belt can be helpful.

Firstly, make sure that you are wearing your Gi correctly. The lapels of the top half should always hang outside the trousers, the trousers reaching a few centimeters off the ground. Once we have our Gi correctly positioned, we must pick up our belt in front of us, and hold it against our waist, with equal lengths to each side, left to dangle to the floor. Wrap both ends around the back of your body tightly, but not too tight to become uncomfortable. Now with the two ends in our hands, we must make the knot to secure the belt. There are some slight variations, but generally, the following applies:

With one end of the belt in each hand, cross the ends of the belt in front of you, firstly the left side, followed by the right hand side. The end of the belt that you now find in your left hand must be tucked under both layers of the belt. This action secures the belt, and the pulling of the ends now is all that is necessary to tighten and secure fully your belt, making a knot in the belt by bending over the belt and securing it through the loop you have made. It may seem complicated at first, but after a few trial runs, you will be able to do it with your eyes closed! So now you are ready to participate in your chosen sport, with your correctly fitting Gi and BJJ Belts, tied like a true professional. We must pride ourselves in our appearance when we take part in Jiu Jitsu, and a correctly fitting Gi and a correctly tied belt make ourselves smart, and ready for action, putting us in the correct frame of mind, focused and ready.
